In honor of the bicentennial of Frankenstein’s publication, we invited a historian of science, a literature scholar, and a biologist to a discussion moderated by a bioethicist. Their panel will explore the reasons that Mary Shelley’s vision has had such a profound effect on our imagination and on the way we structure our understanding of the ethical and social implications of biotechnology.

In January of 2017, Daniel De Simone retired from the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D. C. as the Eric Weinmann Librarian, where he directed the operations of the Central Library. De Simone will examine the legacy of Folger and Rosenwald, discussing how each of these giants of the collecting world came upon their decision to make gifts to the nation and help define the nature of philanthropy in the first half of the 20th century.
