Date / Time

  • June 11, 2020
    6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Location

If you ever wondered where modern neckties came from, this tour is for you! Portrait miniatures present only a partial view of their subjects, but they still have many stories to tell, including those about who was wearing what—and why. Styles of neck wear both mirrored and shaped changing ideas about the male and female body, denoting strength, status, and sexuality. The functional outfits of laborers defined their social standing and the fine fabrics and confining styles of the upper classes announced their wealth and leisure. Contact with foreign cultures introduced new materials and silhouettes, while patterns of political and economic power were reflected in the shifting influence of regional styles on international fashion trends.
