Pirates, enslaved people, shipwreck survivors, emigrants—for centuries people uprooted from lives on land took their chances on the sea. Some have gone willingly, but many had no choice. Look at and handle materials from the 17th to the 19th century by and about a diverse group of individuals whose subsequent achievements tell us about their survival, adaptation, and cultural impact. Explore the works of pirate and author Alexandre Exquemelin; enslaved African and the first published African American woman poet, Phillis Wheatley; shipwreck victim, first Japanese person to live in America, and diplomat Nakahama Manjiro; and international seaman, British immigrant, and author Joseph Conrad.
