Description

The public’s understanding of the 19th century poet Emily Dickinson has been wrong for over a century. Many have thought of her as the Belle of Amherst, a vulnerable recluse who lived a life of quiet passion, while some thought Dickinson could be a little strange but never improper. However, Dickinson, we now know, was far more audacious and lively, a woman whose adventurous writing and challenging ideas continue to resonate today. We‘ll study letters in her own script, re-examine first editions of her works, and learn how Dickinson’s first editors reshaped her poetry to fit their own conceptions. We’ll explore the myth of the Belle and learn more about the Modern Emily.
