Turning Point

A World Premiere Performance
Saturday, January 19, 2013 - 1:00pm - 2:30pm

Rosenbach Musician-in-Residence and acclaimed composer-pianist Dave Burrell returns to the Rosenbach to premiere seven original compositions commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Burrell and trombonist Steve Swell will perform three pieces based on critical moments in 1863: the Emancipation Proclamation, the Battle of Vicksburg, and the Battle of Gettysburg.

Turning Point is the third in a series of five concerts that deliver complementary perspectives on the Civil War in commemoration of its 150th anniversary. In advance of each concert, Mr. Burrell spends hundreds of hours researching and collaborating with Rosenbach staff to make use of the Rosenbach’s collection to explore various topics. This year’s topicsinclude:

  • The Emancipation Proclamation: A series of short pieces capture the realities of slavery and freedom in 1863. Two movements explore topics like the “fancy” slave trade in women and the paradox of freedom, while the other two movements contrast a celebratory church picnic in the wake of the Emancipation Proclamation with disease hitting a camp of escaped and freedslaves.
  • Vicksburg and Gettysburg give voice to the realities of fighting the war’s battles by contrasting the quick and furious fighting at Gettysburg with the drawn-out campaign of Vicksburg. These pieces feature the creative use of the trombone and piano to imitate sounds of battle, like horses anddrums.

After each 60-minute concert, Mr. Burrell will be available to discuss his compositions and the ways in which he found inspiration in the Rosenbach’scollections.

This concert will also be performed on Wednesday, January 16, at 6 pm and Saturday, January 19, 7pm.
