Description
Underground publications have a long history in the United States. Although publishing dissent against the King was forbidden by English law in the 13 Colonies, cheaply (and covertly) printed pamphlets were a cornerstone of the American Revolution. These pamphlets–-typically made with ten or fewer sheets of paper–-transmitted ideas like freedom of religion and the importance of representation in government.
Today, zines continue this legacy: their simple, self-published nature allows for the free distribution of ideas, ranging from poetry to manifestos to gardening advice.
In this hands-on class, you will learn to create dynamic booklets of your own, from the humble pamphlet to a single-sheet book to the French door zine. No prior zine-making experience is required.
Instructor
Bryn Michelson-Ziegler is Assistant Curator of Outreach and Engagement at the Rosenbach Museum & Library and maintains an active book arts practice. She holds an MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from University of the Arts and was a short list nominee for the 2024 Cartoonist Studio Award. Bryn utilizes her book arts practice, which encompasses everything from hand-papermaking and traditional letterpress typesetting to risograph zines, to offer Rosenbach guests exciting material insight into our collections.
This program is part of “The People’s Friend: Civic Dialogues at the Rosenbach.”
As the United States reckons with challenging civic divisions, the Rosenbach is doing its part to create opportunities to learn, grow, and heal together, as one people. “The People’s Friend: Civic Dialogues at the Rosenbach” invites members of our community to learn about history and build a bright future, together.
