Description

This in-depth tour brings us back to the early 18th century as we journey from New York City, home to America’s first Jewish community, to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Along the way, we meet Judah Monis, a passionate Hebrew language instructor and the very first person to teach the language at Harvard University. We’ll delve into the books that chronicle his journey as this descendant of Portuguese conversos (forced converts to Catholicism) clashes with the powerful forces of New England Puritanism. Together, we’ll meet a vivid cast of characters, learn about a dramatic public spectacle in Harvard Yard, and work with some of Dr. Rosenbach’s treasures of early American Judaica.

No experience in reading Hebrew is required, nor do you need to have attended Early Hebrew Books I or Early Hebrew Books II prior to signing up for this tour. Would you like to learn more about early Jewish history in the Rosenbach’s collections?  See Gallery Gateway: In the Beginning here.
