Description

When high school English students connect with the Rosenbach's collection of rare editions and personal letters, they learn that Emily Dickinson was more than an isolated woman with a severe hairstyle and a long white dress. They discover that Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes did not always see eye to eye. They see themselves in letters penned by Oscar Wilde & Herman Melville, as they navigated relationship issues and self-doubt. However, as interesting as these materials may be, we know that the often-illegible writing and unfamiliar language in texts by these authors can be intimidating to students. Join us for this workshop to learn the tricks and tools that Rosenbach educators have developed to help students move past intimidation and towards inspiration. We will spend the first half of the workshop exploring the books and letters in the collection and the second half of the workshop finding connections between the materials and your curriculum to develop lesson ideas you can incorporate into your very next class.
