Description

What is it that makes James Joyce’s Ulysses one of the most challenging novels of the 20th century? How can a novel be inspiring yet off-putting, high-browed yet low-humoured, intellectually challenging yet still remind us of the joys of everyday life? How do we, now one hundred years later, unravel some of the stylistic and narrative puzzles it presents? Cartoonist and Joyce scholar Robert Berry, author of ULYSSES “seen”,  has worked for years on finding new ways to present the joys and challenges of reading Joyce to today’s readers. Join us in a welcoming discussion-based environment with unparalleled access to primary resource materials from our own collection as well his ongoing research into adapting the novel and online lectures. First-time Ulysses readers and returning fans alike are encouraged to help one another swim the waters of this singular novel that leaves so many standing on the shore..

This Ulysses Course meets every first Wednesday of the month from October through June.
