With a warm heart for human nature, a cold eye for the human condition, and prose that would awe a Biblical prophet, Herman Melville was too good for his time. Join us for an odyssey through The Rosenbach’s mighty Melville collection. We’ll chart our voyage toward the source of Melville’s greatness, through early editions of his novels and handwritten letters. Then, we’ll examine Melville’s legacy for modern times by considering four critical themes addressed in The Rosenbach’s new exhibition American Voyager: Herman Melville at 200: social justice, marine conservation, globalization, and LGBTQ issues. Join us as, in the words of Moby-Dick’s Ishmael, we “sail about a little and see the watery part of the world.”
