Join us as we look at selections from The Rosenbach’s very large collection of very small portraits to discover the origins of modern neck wear! Portrait miniatures present only a partial view of their subjects, but they still have many stories to tell, including those about who was wearing what—and why. Styles of neck wear both mirrored and shaped changing ideas about the male and female body, denoting strength, status, and sexuality. While the functional outfits of the middle class defined their social standing, the fine fabrics and confining styles of the upper classes announced their wealth and leisure. Contact among cultures introduced new materials and silhouettes, while patterns of political and economic power were reflected in the shifting influence of regional styles on international fashion trends. This program will be held on Zoom. After registration, you will receive the link via email.
